Charity begins at home for Pete and Jan Herbert

Pete reflects on his and Jan’s, Your Heroes Carer of the Year nomination.
“Eleven years ago, my wife Jan and I decided to become foster carers for the local authority. This marked the end of working in far flung places and we decided to focus on immersing ourselves, and PH as a business in support of the North Staffordshire community.
Over the years we’ve fostered 35 children and we currently fostering adorable twin babies. It was such an honour to find out that we’ve been nominated for “Your Heroes, Carer of the Year” award, by Marie Plant, Fostering Recruitment Officer with Stoke-on-Trent City Council.
The Your Heroes campaign recognises Children of Courage, Future Stars, Charity Champions, Volunteers, Community Groups, NHS Heroes, Inspirations in Education, Carers, Uniformed Heroes, individuals and organisations demonstrating Civic Pride plus Sporting Icons.
The Carer of the Year award recognises a person from the care profession who has done outstanding work over the last 12 months, who has gone above and beyond in looking after and caring for someone or a group of people. They are a credit to their profession and deserve some recognition for all their hard work.
It really is humbling to receive the nomination alongside some amazing people who do so much worthy work in the community. My wife Jan pretty much sums the experience up. She said, “Fostering is very rewarding. It’s the best job in the world. The difference you see between when they first arrive and when they move on is sometimes absolutely amazing. You don’t always notice those changes until you look back to how they were when they first came.”
